INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
------------
WcEDIT! is a new message editor designed specifically for Wildcat.
Fast setup and ease of use make WcEDIT! perfect for the Sysop that
needs a stand alone editor to answer messages without making a
local call to their bbs.
It's main characteristics:
- support for Multinode sharing of Wildcat's databases
- DESQview(tm) awareness, relinquishes time slices when idle
- uses the same nodelist files as Wildcat
- automatic nodelist lookup with a powerful browsing feature
- built-in message editor
- hot key support for an external spell checker
- support for an external message editor
- tagline support with ability to snatch a tagline anywhere
in a message
- easy navigation of Wildcat's conferences
- text search within header or both header and message text
- support for mouse (still under construction)
- built-in configuration program
- context sensitive help anywhere in program
- ability to swap out to DISK, EMS or XMS when shelling to DOS
--------
This manual assumes basic knowledge of the Wildcat bbs software:
otherwise, please refer to the documentation included with your
registered version of Wildcat.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
----------------
WcEDIT! is truly a product of feedback from a knowledgeably group of
beta testers. My special thanks go out to: Scott Bailey, Dick
Paauw, Derek Koopowitz, Rob Lagesse, Wesley Dick, Dave Cody, Ron
Woods, Lee Fisher, Mark Ingenito and all of the crew at MSI for
making Wildcat!.
Now let's get busy!
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 2
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-------------------
Hardware Requirements
---------------------
WcEDIT! was designed to work on the same type of hardware
configurations required for the Wildcat BBS software. While
floppy disk operation may be possible, no effort was made to
insure proper operation on anything but a hard drive.
The following list represents the minimum configuration your system
should have to maximize the potential of the program.
- IBM Personal Computer or 100% compatible.
- 80 column monochrome or color monitor.
- 512K (minimum) RAM, 384K for WcEDIT!.
- A hard drive with 500K free.
Software Requirements
---------------------
To get the most productive use out of the WcEDIT! editor, it is
suggested that you be running MS-DOS or PC-DOS version 3.3 or
higher. The reader has been thoroughly tested with all of these
versions and works with no problem.
Limited testing has been done and WcEDIT! appears to work correctly
using IBM Operating System/2 (OS/2) version 2.0. The testing was
done in a "DOS Compatibility Box".
WcEDIT! requires a registered version of Wildcat 3.xx to be
installed on your system. Earlier versions are NOT compatible
with WcEDIT!.
If you are running the Multiline or Professional versions of
Wildcat, QuarterDeck's DESQview(tm) is required to operate WcEDIT!
with one or more nodes of Wildcat active also.
WcEDIT! does not have a built-in mouse driver. You must load a
compatible device driver for your mouse or other pointing device
to operate correctly. Check the manual for your specific mouse
for installation instructions.
WcEDIT! has the capability of swapping all but 4.5K of itself out
of memory when executing external programs. It is capable of
using your hard drive, expanded memory, or extended memory to swap
to. If using either expanded memory or extended memory, an
appropriate device driver is required to access the memory.

INSTALLATION
FILES INCLUDED
--------------
READ.ME Introductory comments and last minute
changes to the program and documentation.
PACKING.LST This file contains a listing of files that
must be included in the archive.
REGISTER.DOC Printable registration form used for
registering the program.
WCEDIT.EXE The main executable file of WcEDIT!.
WCEDIT.HLP Binary help files for online help.
WCEDIT.TAG An example tagline file.
WCEDIT.DOC The file you are reading now.
INSTALLING WcEDIT! FOR THE FIRST TIME
------------------------------------
1. Backup your whole system! WcEDIT! directly accesses most
database files of Wildcat directly.
2. Create a directory called \WCEDIT.
3. Unarchive the contents of WCEDIT10.ARJ into the \WCEDIT
directory. Make sure the WCEDIT.ID trial registration key
is also in the \WCEDIT directory.
4. If using a multiline version of Wildcat, set a unique
WCNODEID environment for WcEDIT! to use. For a single line
version of Wildcat, suspend ALL programs that access the
Wildcat databases. ^^^
5. Run WCEDIT.EXE and edit the configuration to reflect your
preferences. At a minimum, you must enter your name and
the home drive/directory of Wildcat.
! WARNING ! ! WARNING ! ! WARNING ! ! WARNING !
----------------------------------------------------------
WcEDIT! DOES NOT have the ability to run at the same time as the
SINGLE line version of Wildcat or it's utilities! PERIOD!
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 4
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
--------------------
WcEDIT! supports numerous command line options. These options can
be preceded by either the hyphen ("-") or slash ("/") characters.
/C:<filename> WcEDIT! normally uses WCEDIT.CFG as a
configuration filename. You can use different
setups by using this command line switch to
indicate an alternate configuration file.
/Q This command line parameter turns off all bells,
whistles and other noises. It is very convenient
for when the family is asleep and you want to read
mail without disturbing them.
ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
---------------------
SMARTLOCKS When used in a multiline system under DESQview,
WcEDIT! will sometimes have to retry reading a
locked message or user database. The time between
retries is about a second and is determined by a
very inefficient delay function. If you place SET
SMARTLOCKS=YES in your autoexec.bat file, WcEDIT!
will instead give the whole CPU to the task that has
the database locked. This will speed up the
background task and decrease the time the database
stays locked.
AFLAGS If AFLAGS is set to "EXTENDED" then WcEDIT! will
use ^aFLAGS type flags for the IMMediate and DIRect
Netmail flags
If AFLAGS is set to "ALL" the WcEDIT! will use
^aFLAGS type flags for all the Netmail flags.
EXIT ERRORLEVELS
----------------
WcEDIT! will exit with different errorlevels to indicate certain
conditions that occurred while the program was running. If you run
WcEDIT! from a batch file, these errorlevels can be tested and
actions can be taken. Check your DOS manual if you are unfamiliar
with either errorlevels or batch files.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 5
ERRORLEVELS
ERRORLEVEL CONDITION
---------- -------------------------------------------------
5 A message was entered during the editing session.
1 A fatal error occurred causing WcEDIT! to exit.
0 Normal program termination. No errors.
HELP SYSTEM
-----------
WcEDIT! has an extensive help system built in. Context sensitive
help is available at all times by pressing F1 or by clicking both
buttons on your mouse.
Some help screens will contain keywords that jump to other related
help topics. Use the cursor pad or mouse to move between
keywords. To jump to the topic associated with a keyword, press
ENTER or the left mouse button. Press Alt-F1 to back up one
topic. To bring up an index of all help topics, hit F1 again
after entering the help system.
CONFIGURATION MENU
CONFERENCE PREFERENCES
Selected Areas: (press Enter to edit)
--------------------------------------
This selection will show a list of all the message conferences you
have configured in Wildcat. You can then tag the conferences you
want activated by pressing the ENTER or SPACEBAR keys.
This feature has the same effect as the Update Conferences command
in Wildcat. It will affect which conferences are shown when the
ONLY SELECTED AREAS field is set to Yes. It will also affect which
areas will be downloaded from the TOMCAT mail door.
Only Selected Areas: Y
----------------------
The Area Picklist will only show areas you have selected when this
choice is set to Yes. You can override the default selected here
at any time from the Area Picklist by hitting <Alt-T> - Toggle
Selected Only.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 6
CONFIGURATION MENU
SCREEN OPTIONS
Exploding Windows: Y
--------------------
This is an eye pleasing effect that makes windows appear to explode
onto the screen. If you prefer windows that pop instantly to the
screen, set this option to "N".
Sound Effects: Y
----------------
If you have enabled Exploding Windows, you also have the option
of enabling sound effects. Some people love this feature, but if
it is displeasing to you, it can be disabled by setting it to "N".
Do you want to use the screen blanker: Y
----------------------------------------
WcEDIT! will blank the screen after a predetermined time to prevent
burn-in damage to the monitor. Set this field to Yes if blanking
is desired.
Idle time in seconds before blanking: 210
-----------------------------------------
You can set the time in seconds before the screen blanks anywhere
between a limit of 5-999 seconds. Screen blanking must be set to
Yes for this to have any effect.
Suppress snow (CGA): N
----------------------
Older CGA video systems have a screen breakup commonly called
"snow" that is caused by writing directly to memory. Set this to
yes if you experience the problem.
Display speed when viewing Ansi: 3
----------------------------------
When viewing messages that contain ANSI color and placement code,
you can simulate the online feeling by putting a delay in between
each character shown to the screen. The lower this setting is,
the faster the display of the message. A value of zero will cause
the screen to update as fast as possible.
Enable limited mouse support: Y
--------------------------------
WcEDIT! supports a mouse for most picklist and menu choices. Set
this choice to yes if you want mouse support enabled.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 7
CONFIGURATION MENU
PERSONAL INFORMATION
Your Wildcat user name: YOUR NAME
---------------------------------
In this field you need to enter the exact same name as used in your
Wildcat records. Another name besides the Sysop can be entered as
long as it is present in the user database. It is NOT recommended
that the name be changed once you have configured WcEDIT! for the
first time. Instead, rename the old configuration and create a new
one with the name desired. You can then choose which configuration
to use from the command line.
EX. WCEDIT /cSYSOP.CFG (original configuration renamed to
Sysop.cfg)
Your FIDOnet address: 1:390/3
-----------------------------
If you are a member of FIDOnet, enter your complete address here.
This is the default address that will be used when sending Net or
Matrix Mail. WcEDIT! supports point addressing but at this time,
there are no other mail handling utilities that do.
PRINTER OPTIONS
Printer to use: PRN
-------------------
WcEDIT! supports PRN, LPT1, LPT2 and LPT3 as valid printer ports.
Use the spacebar to toggle between choices and match the port your
printer is connected to. PRN is the same as LPT1.
Printer initialization string: (No Default)
-------------------------------------------
If you want to send codes to set your printer to a specific
configuration, this is the place to do it. Printer setup varies
from machine to machine so a quick look at your printer manual
should detail the necessary information.
See Printer reset for info on how to enter Ctrl codes.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 8
CONFIGURATION MENU
Printer reset string: ^L
------------------------
This is where you can enter codes to reset your printer, issue a
line feed at the end of the message or return to a custom
configuration. To enter Ctrl codes such as ^L (line feed), hit
Ctrl-P, then the key combination of the ctrl character you want
entered.
EX. Line feed = <Ctrl-P><Ctrl-L>
ESC = <Ctrl-P><ESC>
FILE DIRECTORIES
Wildcat home directory: C:\WC30\
--------------------------------
This is where you enter the home directory for Wildcat. This is the
same directory that Makewild.Dat is located in along with the rest
of the Wildcat support files. You will get an error if the Makewild
data file is not found. The trailing backslash is optional.
External Editor Path: C:\UTIL\TED.COM
-------------------------------------
If you prefer an external editor for writing messages you can enter
a command line to invoke it here. If any command line options are
entered besides the filename of your editor, you must enter the
filename configured to take the message text from after editing.
That filename is the same as the "Name of file for Quoted text"
field.
EX. "C:\UTIL\TED.COM"
EX. "C:\UTIL\Q.EXE /B REPLY.MSG"
To use a different file for Quoted and Reply text:
EX. "C:\UTIL\Q.EXE QUOTE.MSG REPLY.MSG"
Name of file for Quoted text: WCEDIT.MSG
----------------------------------------
WcEDIT! has the ability to pass two filenames to your external
editor. The first will contain the original quoted text of the
message you are replying to. The second will be read back in after
editing and only the text that it contains will be in your saved
response.
Enter the filename you want to use for the original QUOTED
text file here.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 9
CONFIGURATION MENU
Name of file for Reply text: WCEDIT.MSG
---------------------------------------
WcEDIT! has the ability to pass two filenames to your external
editor. The first will contain the original quoted text of the
message you are replying to. The second will be read back in after
editing and only the text that it contains will be in your saved
response.
Enter the filename you want to use for your REPLY text here.
Spelling checker path: C:\UTIL\SS.EXE
-------------------------------------
WcEDIT! allows you to use an external spelling checker to check
messages edited with the internal editor. Any spelling checker
that can take a filename on the command line should work. If the
spelling checker requires any command line switches, you can enter
them after the path/filename of the program.
Ex. "C:\UTIL\SS.EXE /B"
This would be expanded to "C:\UTIL\SS.EXE /B WCEDIT.MSG".
Tagline file name: WCEDIT.TAG
-----------------------------
The tagline file is a list of "one-liners" that will be appended
to the end of messages you write. WcEDIT! defaults to using the
filename "WcEDIT.TAG" but you can change it here if desired.
EDITOR OPTIONS
Use External Editor: N
----------------------
WcEDIT! has a built-in text editor with only simple capabilities.
For advanced features such block text operations, you can use an
external editor instead. Any editor can be used as long as it
can take a filename to edit as a command line parameter.
Editor Right Margin: 72
-----------------------
Provides a convenient way to adjust the default right margin of
the internal editor. When Word Wrap is activated, words will
wrap-around to the next line when the right margin is reached.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 10
CONFIGURATION MENU
Delete Joins Lines: Y
---------------------
If set to Yes, hitting Del at the end of a line within the
internal editor will bring up the next line to the current one.
This is the same action as hitting <^T> - Delete Word Right.
Insert mode as default: Y
-------------------------
Determines whether the internal editor will start up in the
insert or overstrike mode. Insert mode is required to add
lines of text at the end of a message when ENTER
is hit at the end of the last line.
Spaces to expand Tabs: 4
------------------------
Determines the amount of spaces tabs will be expanded to when
reading messages.
Word Wrap mode as default: Y
----------------------------
While typing text into the internal editor, if the end of the line
is reached as determined by the right margin setting, the cursor
will wrap around to the next line. This feature can be enabled as
the default by setting word wrap as default to yes.
Swap to Disk for Shell: RAM
---------------------------
Use the spacebar or <+/-> to toggle.
Determines if WcEDIT! swaps all but 4.5K of itself out whenever a
Shell to Dos is invoked and whether it will use EMS, XMS or your
Hard Drive to swap to. Choosing the default of RAM disables
swapping but requires a large amount of memory when shelling out
to run external programs such as a spell checker.
MESSAGE TEMPLATES
Quote character: >
------------------
When quoting a message, WcEDIT! takes the initials of the first
and last name of the person the message was originally from, plus
the quoting character, and places it before each line of text.
You can define which character is used by this field.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 11
CONFIGURATION MENU
NOTE: If the quoting character is blank, no quoting will be
performed. The message text will be placed unaltered into
the editor.
Quoted message header line: On @DATE@, @FROM@ said:
---------------------------------------------------
WcEDIT! will place this line at the top of every quoted message.
See also @-CODES descriptions.
New conference header line: Answering a message in area @CONF@:
---------------------------------------------------------------
WcEDIT! will place this line at the top of messages posted using
the New Conference reply option.
See also @-CODES descriptions.
Salutation line: Hello @FIRST@!
-------------------------------
WcEDIT! will place this line at the top of all messages posted. It
is intended as a greeting line but can be used in any fashion
desired.
See also @-CODES descriptions.
Tagline Preference: Sequential
------------------------------
Determines the method a Tagline is chosen, if at all by WcEDIT!.
Sequential - WcEDIT! maintains an index of the last Tagline chosen
and will pick the next one in the order of the
WcEDIT.Tag file.
Random - A Tagline is chosen randomly from the WcEDIT.TAG
file for every new message entered.
Choose - A picklist of the taglines in the WcEDIT.TAG file
will be offered every time a message is initiated.
You may hit [ENTER] or use the spacebar to select
a tagline.
None - No tagline will be appended to the message.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 12
READING MESSAGES
@-CODES EXPLAINED
-----------------
To expand the ability to customize messages to the sysop's
preference, WcEDIT supports @-CODES similar to those used in
Wildcat's display files. These codes can be used in the
Salutation line and other header lines depending on the type of
message (quoted, new conference etc.) that you are writing. All
capitals MUST be used.
These include: @FROM@ - Name of person the message was
originally from.
@FROMFIRST@ - First name of the person the
message was originally from.
@TO@ - Name of person the message was
originally to.
@TOFIRST@ - First name of the person the
message was originally to.
@DATE@ - Date of original message.
@TIME@ - Current time of your system.
@DATE@ - Current date of your system.
@CONF@ - Original conference of the message.
@SUBJ@ - Subject of the message.
WcEDIT 1.02 Page 13
READING MESSAGES
READING MESSAGES
----------------
CONFERENCE SELECTION
--------------------
WcEDIT will bring up the Conference Selection picklist after
initializing. From here you can choose a conference for reading,
enter a new message in the conference of your choice, or exit
WcEDIT.
You may choose a conference for reading by highlighting the
desired area using the UP and DOWN arrows and pressing ENTER. You
may also simply enter the NUMBER of the message area you desire
and hit ENTER.
All conferences defined in Wildcat are available depending upon
whether you have "Only Selected Conferences" set to YES or NO.
This can be toggled on the fly by hitting <Alt-T>.
If new messages have been written or tossed into Wildcat while
WcEDIT is running, the picklist can be updated by hitting <Alt-R>.
This causes a rescan of available areas and updates message totals.
╒ # ══ Area Name ════════════ Unread Total ═ High ══ Low ═ Last ═╕
│ 0 │ Private E-Mail (0) 269 285 1 285 │
│ 1 │ ■Local Public Messages (1) 185 345 105 342 │

│ 3 │ Alias Conference (43) 68 140 72 97 │
╘═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
As can be seen from the example picklist above, a conference that
has new personal mail to you will have a tag next to it. The text
color of the line will also be different if you are using a color
monitor.
If a mouse is installed and is enabled in the configuration, a
position indicator will appear on the right edge of the picklist
window. You can then scroll up and down by clicking the mouse on
this edge of the window. You can also pick the conference you want
to read messages in by clicking on the line containing the area you
want to select.

WcEDIT displays the first message AFTER the last message you have
read by checking the message pointers in Wildcat. It also keeps
track of which messages you have read by updating your user records
in Wildcat.
As of version 1.01 of WcEDIT!, the text import feature Wildcat is
supported. You can insert the text of a file directly into a message
by placing "<<FILENAME.IMP" at the beginning of a line of a message.
Check chapter 6 - Message Menu in your Wildcat manual for
further details on using this feature.

READING MESSAGES
MESSAGE COMMANDS
----------------
This section describes the various commands that are available from
the Message Reader Screen.
<RIGHT>&<LEFT> - Next and Previous Message in NUMBER sort order
Pressing the <RIGHT> arrow key will display the next message in the
conference. Pressing the <LEFT> arrow key will display the previous
message in the conference. Pressing ENTER will always move you to
the next message.
If you are at the last message in a conference, pressing ENTER or
the <RIGHT> arrow key will bring up the Conference Selection menu.
DIGITS <4>&<6> - Next and Previous Message in THREAD sort order
Pressing the number 6 will display the next message in THREAD order.
If the last message is reached, the first message will be displayed
in wrap around fashion. Pressing the number 4 will display the
previous message in THREAD order. It is to be noted that last read
message pointers are not updated when reading in THREAD sort order.
NOTE: Advanced users can use the number pad + the Numlock key to
determine whether to read in the message NUMBER or THREAD
sorting orders. With NumLock off, the arrow keys are active;
with Numlock on, the number keys are active.
<Alt-R>, <INS> - ENTER A MESSAGE
Pressing either of these keys will pop up a picklist of Reply
Options. See ENTERING A MESSAGE for further details.
<Alt-C> - CHANGE THE CURRENT MESSAGE
This command allows you to modify the current message without
resetting any flags or the time and date. It is useful for making
last minute changes to messages previously entered.
<Alt-L>, <L> - LIST MESSAGES
This command brings up a scrollable listing of message headers. It
is useful for quickly scanning through the message base for a
specific message. Your name will be highlighted whenever it is in
the TO or FROM field of a message. Until you have replied to a
message that is addressed to you, the highlight color will be
bright Yellow. After you reply, the color will change to normal
bright White.

Your current message will be highlighted in the message lister.
Using the UP, DOWN, PGUP and PGDN keys, you can move the highlight
bar to the desired message. If ESC is hit, you will be returned to
reading messages at the original point.
While listing messages, the following commands are enabled:
<ENTER> - Accept the highlighted message and return to
reading messages.
<HOME>/<END> - Go to the FIRST/LAST message in the conference.
<Alt-D>,<DEL> - Delete the highlighted message; ask first.
<Alt-S> - Change the sort order of the listing.
<Alt-D>, <DEL> - DELETE MESSAGE
This is a true delete. The message is purged from the database and
it's space is available for another message.
<Alt-F> - SEARCH FOR TEXT
Prompts for text to search message header and text body. The search
is performed from the current message to the last in the current
conference. The text to be searched for is retained so multiple
occurrences of the text can be found.
<Ctrl-F> - SEARCH HEADER FOR TEXT
Same as SEARCH FOR TEXT except that only the message header is
searched.

READING MESSAGES
<Alt-S> - SAVE MESSAGE
Prompts for a filename to save the message to. If the file does
exist, the message will be appended to the end of it. Pressing F2
will send the message to your printer.
<Alt-A>, <ESC> - CHANGE CONFERENCE
This command pops up the CONFERENCE SELECTION picklist and allows
you to change conferences.
<Alt-G> - GOTO SPECIFIED MESSAGE NUMBER
This command allows you to type in a message number to go directly
to. If the message does not exist, the next higher number is
displayed.
<Alt-B> - SET BOOKMARK
Toggles a bookmark on the current message. You can return to the
bookmarked message by pressing <Ctrl-B>. Only one bookmark is
allowed in a conference and it is automatically set to the first
message you read in the conference. Once you leave a conference,
the bookmark is lost.
<Ctrl-B> GOTO BOOKMARK
Go directly to the bookmarked message in the current conference.
<Alt-J> JUMP TO DOS
Shell to Dos and optionally run a program using the configured
swapping option of RAM, DISK, EMS or XMS.
<Alt-K> COPY MESSAGE
Copy the current message to another conference.
<Alt-H> STEAL TAGLINE
Move the cursor to the line in the message you want added to your
Tagline file and press <Alt-H>. WcEDIT can strip the mail reader
name out of the line if it was produced by a recognized program.
A tagline will not be added if it is a duplicate.

ENTERING MESSAGES
ENTERING A MESSAGE
------------------
Besides reading messages stored in Wildcat's message databases,
WcEDIT also has the capability to originate new ones. Great care
has been taken to support all the features available from within
Wildcat itself. Users are notified of new mail written with
WcEDIT, files can be attached to messages and message flags such
as Private, Return Receipt and NetMail Crash can all be set. In
the case of multiline versions of Wildcat, as soon as a message is
complete and has been saved, it is available for online reading or
through the Tomcat mail door.
MESSAGE SPLITTING
-----------------
Although the maximum size of a message written within WcEDIT is
twelve kilobytes, Wildcat only permits a maximum of 150 lines per
message. Also, some E-Mail networks limit the message length
even shorter than that. To maintain compatibility, WcEDIT checks
the Max Lines Per Message field in Makewild for the conference you
are in. It then splits messages that are too long into multiple
messages that fit the maximum line limits.
There is one exception to this. The RIME Common Conference has a
maximum line limit of 10 lines per message not including taglines.
Since there is a 6 line overhead in the splitting of a message,
that only leaves 4 lines for text. To work around such short line
limits, if a conference is configured with a less than 21 line
limit per message, WcEDIT will not attempt to split the message.
However, it does limit the internal editor to the configured line
limit.
REPLY OPTIONS
-------------
After you have selected the ENTER A MESSAGE command from the
message reader, a picklist of REPLY OPTIONS will pop up.
At this point, you can use the ┌─── Reply Options ────┐

-------------
Quoting a message puts the first and last initials of the
person you are responding to plus the ">" symbol before each
line of the original message. You can selectively edit out
the lines not pertaining to your response (highly
recommended).
REPLY NO QUOTING
----------------
Use this choice if you want to enter a message to the name
listed in the FROM field of the current message without
quoting any of the text.
ENTER NEW MESSAGE
-----------------
Start a new message with a default of to ALL.
NEW CONFERENCE
--------------
Quotes the current message and addresses it to the name
listed in the FROM field. You are then prompted for the
conference to enter the message in. Hitting ESC while
choosing a conference will abort the message and return to
READING MESSAGES.
FORWARD MESSAGE
---------------
Forward the current message to another user in the conference
of your choice.
Abort /ESC
---------
Aborts the new message and returns you to READING MESSAGES.
CHOOSING A TAGLINE
------------------
If you have configured TAGLINE OPTIONS to CHOOSE, a picklist of
available taglines will pop up. At this point you can select the
tagline you prefer, hit [Alt-R] to jump randomly to another line
or hit ESC for no tagline.

If the reply conference is defined as a Netmail conference in
Makewild and you have a valid, compiled nodelist, you may enter a
partial or a full name. WcEDIT! will check the nodelist and if a
partial match is found, the NODELIST BROWSER will pop up. You can
then pick the line entry containing the address and sysop's name
you want to be inserted into the proper fields. If an exact match
on the name entered is found, the address will be looked up and
inserted into the address field without activating the nodelist
browser.
<Alt-S> - SORT ORDER
You also can toggle the sort order while in the NODELIST
BROWSER. The available sorting options are SYSOP NAME and
ADDRESS.

MESSAGE FIELDS
--------------
FROM
----
This field contains the name of the person originating the
message. This will usually be your name or ALIAS unless you are
modifying an existing message from someone else. All other types
of messages will have this field filled in automatically by
WcEDIT. You ALIAS will be used instead of your real name if the
conference you are replying in is configured to use alias names.
FROM NETMAIL ADDRESS
--------------------
This field will automatically be filled with your address as entered
in WcEDIT!'s configuration. It is available only if the conference
is configured as a NetMail conference in Makewild. The field can be
edited if you want to use an AKA different from your main address.
TO
--
This field contains the name of the person the message is
addressed to. If entering a new message, you are prompted for a
name here. If QUOTING or REPLYING to a message, the name of the
author of the original message is filled in. This is a required
field. If nothing is entered, WcEDIT! will beep at you as a
warning.
TO NETMAIL ADDRESS
------------------
This is the field used to enter the netmail address of the system
the message is being addressed to. If a partial address such as
390/1 (My hub) is entered, WcEDIT! will use your address as the
default to fill in any Zone, Net, Node or Point information not
provided. So entering 1, 390/1 or 1:390/1 will be expanded to
1:390/1.0 automatically.
This field is only available if the conference is configured as a
NetMail conference in Makewild.

╘══════════════════════════╛
<Alt-E> - RECEIVED
Flags the message as received. This is normally used only
when using the CHANGE MESSAGE command but is available
whenever you are editing the message header.
<Alt-P> - PRIVATE
Flags the message as PRIVATE, although a better description
would be PRIVILEGED because no message is truly private.
Anyone with high enough security can read the message. This
is especially true with off-system messages such as NetMail
or Routed mail.
NOTE: This flag is automatically set if the message you are
QUOTING or REPLYING to was marked PRIVATE.
<Alt-R> - RECEIPT REQUESTED
If this status flag is set, Wildcat will generate a message
informing you when the message was read.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 25
ENTERING MESSAGES
<Alt-D> - NEVER DELETE
Setting this status flag will prevent utilities that maintain
the size of the message database from deleting the message.
It is useful for conference rules and information that you
want to remain on the system permanantly. Be Warned! I have
found that if you have the purge option turned on in
Wildmail, it's tossing speed will slow down tremendously in
conferences where the lowest number message has the NoDel
flag set.
<Alt-S> - SENT BY WILDMAIL
Wildmail determines whether a message has been sent by
checking this flag. If you do not want a message to be
echoed, you can toggle this flag to SNT
FIDONET NETMAIL FLAGS
--------------------
At the present time, Wildmail is the only Fido compatible
tosser available for Wildcat. The only flags supported are
the Private and Crash flags. Even if other flags such as
Hold or File Request (FREQ) are set by WcEDIT!, they are
cleared by Wildmail before the message is tossed. This is
to be fixed in a later version of Wildmail.
In the meantime, there is another way to implement these
flags. If your mailer supports the ^aFLAGS specification
as documented in FSC-0053.A01, then you will be able to use
WcEDIT! to send File Attaches, File Request etc...
From the limited testing I have done, D'Bridge supports the
specification fully. Front Door only supports the Extended
flags IMMediate and DIRect. Binkley does not support any.
To use the ^aFLAGS method of passing NetMail flags to your
mailer, you will need to put "SET AFLAGS=ALL" in your
Autoexec.bat file or the batch file that runs your
mailer/bbs. Once Wildmail adds support for the standard
Netmail flags, you will only need "SET AFLAGS=EXTENDED" if
you want to be able to use the Extended flags and if your
mailer supports them.
<Alt-C> - CRASH (NetMail Only)
Conferences configured as NetMail have this status flag as
an option. It sets the message as high priority and will be
handled in a manner depending on how your front end mailer
is set up.
WcEDIT! 1.02 Page 26
ENTERING MESSAGES
<Alt-F> - FILE REQUEST (FREQ)
If this flag is set, the Subject field prompt will be
changed to "File :". You can then enter filename(s) you
want to request from the system the message is addressed
to. Wildcards are acceptable.
<Alt-T> - TRANSMIT FILE
If this flag is set, the Subject field prompt will change
as mentioned above to "File :". You can then enter the
path/filename(s) to files on your system that you want
transmitted to the system the message is addressed to.
There is no error checking so make sure the paths you give
are correct.
<Alt-H> - HOLD
Places a hold on the message so that the system it is
addressed to must poll your system to pick up the message.
<Alt-K> - KILL SENT
Signals to your front end that the message should be deleted
after it is successfully sent.
EXTENDED FLAGS
--------------
<Alt-I> - IMMEDIATE
Messages with the IMMediate flag set will be assigned the
highest priority by your front end. These messages will be
sent before crash or normal status mail.
<Alt-D> - DIRECT
Messages with the DIRect flag set will be routed directly to
the system they are addressed to. Any routing you might have
setup for normal Netmail messages will be ignored.

EDITING THE MESSAGE TEXT
------------------------
Although sophisticated external editors are supported, WcEDIT! has
a simple text editor built right in. It supports a subset of the
standard WordStar(tm) commands and if you have used other editors,
many of the commands should be familiar to you. Also, Help is
available by pressing F1 at any time.
<F1> - HELP
Display help on the major functions of the internal editor.
<Alt-A> - ABORT MESSAGE
Prompts for confirmation and aborts the message being edited. If
a file is attached to the message, it is deleted.
<ESCape> - EDIT HEADER
Jump to editing the header of the message.
<Alt-C> - CHECK SPELLING
Check spelling of the message with an external spelling checker.
You must correctly configure an external spelling checker for this
to work. WcEDIT! will warn you if your spelling checker cannot be
found.
<Alt-R> - READ FILE
Read/import a specified text file and insert it into the message at
the cursor position. If you are unsure of the filename, you can hit
ENTER or wildcards matching the desired search criteria in the
prompt field. A file selection box will pop up and allow you to
search your drive.
<Alt-S> - SAVE MESSAGE w/PROMPT
Saves the message to Wildcat's database with confirmation.

30 DAY EVALUATION
30 DAY EVALUATION COPY
----------------------
WcEDIT! v1.02 is a fully functional, full featured message editor
for WILDCAT! v3.xx. This program is not disabled in any way but
does require the use of a special 30 day evaluation key. This key
is obtainable by dialing the WcEDIT! support BBS at the number
listed above.
The 30-day trial key is generated automatically thru a registration
door on my bbs. For quickest access, use the following sign-on
information:
Enter your FIRST name ? !WCEDIT TRIAL KEY
This will take you directly to the WcEDIT! trial key door. Enter
your Name and Wildcat registration number EXACTLY as you have it
configured in the first screen of Makewild. A key will be
generated and you will be able to download it immediately.
This temporary key will allow WcEDIT! to run FOR 30 DAYS without
registration, after which, the program will simply cease to run.
This should be sufficient time to properly evaluate the program
for fitness prior to its actual registration.
After you register the program, you will receive the WcEDIT.ID
file and then by placing it in the \WCEDIT directory, it will
reactivate the program for normal use.
